Black agate is a variety of chalcedony, which itself belongs to the quartz family. Chalcedony forms as a microcrystalline mineral — meaning its crystals are too small to see with the naked eye, giving the stone its characteristic smooth, waxy appearance. The black colour comes from inclusions of carbon, iron oxides, and other minerals that were present during the stone’s formation.
Most black agate you encounter in the market today has been heat-treated or dyed to deepen and even out its colour. This is a widely accepted and entirely normal practice in the gemstone trade, and it does not diminish the stone’s quality or its physical properties. Naturally black agate does exist, though it tends to be less uniformly coloured and is somewhat rarer.
